House Speaker Paul D. Ryan’s decision to no longer stump for GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump prompted biting condemnations from within his caucus and from Trump himself. It also destroyed any semblance of party unity behind a nominee whom many Republican leaders said they could no longer stomach because of his character traits and tawdry campaign tactics.
As Donald Trump bounces from one controversy to another and Hillary Clinton gains in the polls, some of the GOP nominee’s most devoted supporters are pointing fingers at many people they say are to blame — including Trump.
Former attorney general Michael Mukasey said “it would be like a banana republic” if Trump followed through with a threat during Sunday’s debate that, if elected, he would seek a “special prosecutor” to investigate and possibly imprison Hillary Clinton over the use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.
Top party strategists are working quickly to ensure that no Republican lawmakers who have ever expressed support for Donald Trump can easily separate themselves from the embattled GOP nominee.

Towns across the state have been deluged with record flooding after Hurricane Matthew, paralyzing roadways, blackening power grids and leaving some communities stranded, with no easy way to call for help.
The emergency appeal came as local aid officials struggled to get food, medicine and water to increasingly desperate communities still isolated almost a week after Hurricane Matthew struck the country.
